Children are not at risk from infected mother's breast milk

Whether a corona positive mother can infect her child through breastfeeding or not, people are very confused about it. To overcome this, american scientists have recently done a research. In it, he has said that no evidence has been found so far about the transfer of the virus from the infected woman to her child through breastfeeding. This research has been published in the journal Pediatric Research.

Corona virus found in breast milk

According to scientists, a very small amount of genetic material of the corona virus has been found in breast milk. Although the virus from this material can multiply and infect a baby drinking milk, there has been no clinical evidence of this.

Children are not at risk from infected mother's breast milk

Researchers from the University of California examined the breast milk of 110 female volunteers in this research. These mothers donated their samples for university research. Of these, 65 women were corona infected at the time of donation. There were nine women who had symptoms of the virus, but their reports were negative. Apart from this, there were also 36 women who did not get themselves tested despite having symptoms.

The scientists found the genetic material of the original form of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in 7 out of 110 samples, or 6% of the women who breastfed. These women were either corona infected or had symptoms of the virus.

In the second phase of the research, the researchers took re-samples of breast milk of these 7 women. In these samples taken between 1 and 97 days, the genetic material of corona was not found. This simply means that the virus did not multiply in breast milk.

Lead scientist Paul Crogstad of the research says, "Mother's milk is a huge source of nutrition for babies. In the research, we did not find any evidence that the breast milk of mothers infected with COVID-19 contains a lot of coronavirus. At the same time, there is no evidence of infants being infected, which suggests that there is no risk to them from breastfeeding. "

How to breastfeed when you are corona positive?

The World Health Organization (WHO) says that such women can breastfeed children, but by taking certain precautions. For example, disinfect the things around you, clean the hands with soap-water or sanitizer before adopting the baby and keep the mask on.

According to experts, most mothers understand that breastfeeding is only necessary for the baby, but that is not the case. Mothers also get many benefits. For example, after delivery, the increased weight starts to be controlled. It also reduces the risk of diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Apart from these, the possibility of bone weakening disease i.e. osteoporosis and post-pregnancy bleeding also decreases in the future.
